Just bought this from ebay & waiting for it to arrive for my boyfriend’s birthday. He mentioned he wanted one a while ago & I thought it’d be a nice surprise however, the reason I picked this one is that it ended soon & was “pretty”- I know nothing about harmonicas & was hoping to print off some kind of details on how he can learn to play it can anyone help me out with the kind of harmonica from the pictures included? Thanks a lot What I found out was – The link is gone, but the title says that it’s an “echo” harmonica. While the shape of it looks like a diatonic, the “echo” is a totally different kind of instrument. There are multiple reeds set in each hole, that are pitch-offset to give a “tremelo” sort of sound. The actual tuning (I think) is set up more like a chromatic harmonica. I bet your boyfriend wants a diatonic harmonica. That’s the most common type used for country/blues/rock/folk music. youtube is a great place to start learning the harmonica. Many free instructional videos are available from people like Adam Gussow, Ronnie Shellist, Dave Barrett, Jon Gindick, and even me (12gagedan). Good luck.

Sheet music is a hand-written or printed form of musical notation; like its analogs — books, pamphlets, etc. — the medium of sheet music typically is paper (or, in earlier times, parchment). . After looking around, I learned — What about them? During the American Civil War, harmonica was a portable folk instrument used for self entertainment and parlor/campfire music. It was used in that period as a melodic instrument playing whatever tunes the player happened to know. It was very rare that more than one musician would be in the same place ready to play some tunes so it was most often alone or took turns melodically with perhaps a fiddler or fifer who happened to be around. On some rare occasions there might be a concertina player but not our modern idea of a guitar and bass backing some blues harmonica wailing. The playing style would be what we now refer to as “straightharp” and particularly “grandpa style” where we don’t worry so much about restricting the air to one hole at a time – we just let the chords form around the melodic line. Very few players would have bothered to learn the songs in minor keys or mixolydian mode though some songs in dorian mode (a minor mode) would have been easy enough. Mostly it was simple tunes in a major diatonic scale – like folk songs. Any simple diatonic tune well known in the period would have been reproduced on harmonica. Bonnie Blue Flag (for example) is a pretty easy one on harmonica that is Civil War specific. Harmonica made a serious debut in America in that period but it wasn’t until after the war and leading into the early 20th century that it really caught on big-time. The cowboys out west really gave it a bump and then the blues guys along the big-river kicked it up another notch. During the war the folks tended to be a little distracted by the events of war – but, since it fits nicely in the pocket and is very cheap, it got around on both sides pretty well and really created the distribution that allowed it to be around for those later cowboys and bluesmen. A good list of easy-to-play period music can be found by looking over any list of the compositions of Stephen Foster. He was the “rock star” of the time and gave us such greats as Camptown Races and Swanee River (Old Folks at Home) and O. Susannah. Most of the tunes that are famous/infamous as “grandpa style” harmonica wailing and that lived on well after that period.

Learn To Play Harmonica In C

I’ve never played the harmonica in my life but want to learn, so as you can guess have no idea where to start. Which ways of learning are best?, a book, instructional cd/dvd. . ?. And Which books are good? I was kinda inspired to learn by Steven Tyler or Aerosmith, so would probably like to play in a bluesy rock style. (I think he plays the diatonic 10 hole harmonica). And if you learn on say, a C harmonica, and pick up an A harmonica, is it exactly the same, so that you can transfer everything you learned on C to A with no problem? Thanks. Well, I have your answer. Changing for C to A will just change it to a lower pitch, but still plays the same way. I recommend “Mel Bay” book written by Stan Musial the old time cardinal baseball great. I learned on my own, but suggest you buy some material or find someone to help you out. I was just 7 years old and had nothing better to do.

Simple Harmonica Tabs

I play guitar, but recently I’ve been really interested in harmonica. It’s a really simple instrument, from what I see, but I’m having trouble, lame I know. How do I read the tabs?? I got the whole +=blow -=draw, & how to hold it, I guess. But reading harmonica tabs & playing them is what I don’t get. Also, exactly how do you hold it?? I don’t mean position, I mean high pitch notes on the left, or right? Any info. Is good. Thanks. I was happy to learn… Q: Any good harmonica players out there? A. Well I’m a so-so harp player. First of all the low notes are supposed to be on the left. Although Paul Butterfield insisted on holding it the opposite with the high notes on the left. I say do whatever works. As far as tabs, a great website is As far as the actual tabs go, I take them with a grain of salt. Sort of like it will get you in the ballpark but feel free to change notes if it sounds better to you. I don’t play guitar and have no music theory, but like Jordan, I play simmering much by ear. I do play in 2 bands, and play weekly in open jams, and most of the songs we do aren’t in the key of the song tabs I do have so I just use the tab sheets (if I have one) and wing it using the tabs as a rough guide. Much of the time (and most of the songs we play) I don’t have the tabs at my disposal so I just play something that sounds good. If I can’t get into the song for some reason, I’ll just lay back. The harp is certainly easier to play than a guitar but it is harder than it may first appear. I would just recommend recording your practice sessions so you can hear what works and what doesn’t.

Harmonica Songs In Key Of A

I want to play along with songs by the Band. I just got a harmonica (key of C) and I am a total beginner. I know you have to have the right key to play along with a song. I found the guitar chords to “It Makes No Difference” online and at the top of the page it says “TUNING: EADGBe. ” Is this is the info I need? If so, what harmonica key would that indicate? What would the tuning info say for a song that I could play along with on my brand-new C harp? (I love the Allman Brothers too, if you know any of their songs that I could play along with on a C harp please tell me what they are. ) Thanks. I am seriously a brand-new beginner, if I sound daft don’t hassle me. Today I found out that… A diatonic harmonica (10-hole) is usually played in cross-harp (2nd position), so you would use a C harp in a song that is in the key of G. You can still play a C harp in the key of C (called “straight harp” or 1st position), but it does not have the same bluesy sound and feel (unless your are actually playing blues in 1st position, mainly on the lower octave and the higher octave, like Jimmy Reed use to play). A diatonic harmonica has “missing” notes, but they can be found by “bending” (flattening) certain notes. . Not all notes can be “bent”. . some draw notes can be bent, and some blow notes can be bent. It takes a lot of practice to get these “missing” notes, but very rewarding musically when you finally get there. . It an ongoing learning process. Well of course there are other “positions” as well, but that’s beyond “beginner” stuff. So look for songs in the key of G (and C) for your C harp to play along with. . To get a list of songs, try doing an world wide web search for “song keys for harmonica”. David Barrett’s Harmonica Masterclass website has a large list of blues songs and artists with the song keys and harp keys used.

Harmonica Software

Hi, I’m looking for Starcraft 2 Terran theme music tabs for harmonica, if anyone can find or make some that would be great, but otherwise, if there is any software that can listen to the music file and then write the tabs itself would be really good too, so thanks. After looking around, I learned — There is no harmonica in the song. The closest thing to sounding like a harmonica was the violin. —————————————— If you tell me what type of harmonica you have and what key the harmonica is in. . And specify a certain part, I can translate it for you. ——————– Make another question with the song link and in the description put something like: Starcraft 2—— 0. 40 sec- 1. 15 sec – I have a 10 hole diatonic in the key of “C”. Or a 12 hole Chromatic in “C”. . . Etc. – Can you transpose the “guitar part” or the “Violin Part”. . Etc – Without overblows or certain Bends. . Etc. ——————— Make a new question like that and we can do it. I could transpose it all for you, but it would take me 26 hours and by the end of it I wouldn’t even know if you have the right key harmonica or can even bend. . . .

Bending Notes On A Harmonica

And how should I do it? I heard that bending notes on a 24-hole harmonica is more difficult than on a 10-hole one. I own a 24-hole harmonica in C at the moment, but I’ll go for a 10-holes or 12-holes the next time. And how should I choose which key to buy? Thanks. Well, I have your answer right here. 24 holes is a double reed harmonica. Every pitch has two reeds either slightly apart or in octaves. The problem bending one of those is that it’s two reeds for each pitch which effectively doubles the amount of pressure needed to make the bend – very, very difficult task and incredibly hard to bend them both the same amount at the same time which is the only way to keep them in tune. But, if you can play on the isolated single reed (either top or bottom) then it’s as easy to bend as any other harmonica. The other issue is that we don’t mostly use that sort of harmonica for blues playing and the whole bending of pitches is a blues technique. The tremolo and octave harps are for tune playing and especially folk tunes. What to buy in a 10-hole. Hohner Marine Band, Special 20, or Blues Harp; Lee Oskar major diatonic; Suzuki bluesmaster or folkmaster; etc. . Any of these should run you between $30-50 depending on where you get it. If you have to buy cheap then the Hohner Big River will save you any money. If you have to go really cheap then the Hohner Blues Band can be had under $10 and sometimes under $5. But, these lower level harps won’t last as long and won’t respond as well as will the better instruments. What key depends on whether you have a specific need for a specific key (such as a teacher told you to buy one, your lesson tutorial book/video is for a specific key. Or you play with someone who only knows one key) – C is most common to start with because most tutorials are written for C harp. Very many lower-level harps only come in C. A is a good choice because it responds easily as is G. The higher pitched harps (E F F# HG) tend to get on any people’s nerves and they can be a little more difficult to bend on. Ultimately, if you play seriously, you’ll need harps in each key and different type of harp for different tasks. Starting out, you won’t go wrong with a Special 20 in C to see what you like and don’t and to get started well. Then you can pick other models/keys based on what you do or don’t like about the Special 20 in C.

How To Hold A Harmonica

$

I’m seriously considering trying out harmonica, but I’m afraid my hands, which already limit my piano ability slightly, might be too small to allow me to properly get this “cup” around the back of the harmonica I keep reading about. With hands not longer than 15cm (≈6 inches) from wrist to middle finger tip (and a middle finger length of 7cm/2. 5 inches), should I just give up now? How long is the average (10-hole diatonic) harmonica, and can I realistically expect to get a good hold on one. I was so pleased to find this — Everyone plays the harmonica differently. If you have small hands, that will only be one thing that you can’t do. There are many good harmonica players that don’t do hand effects by choice. Everyone has a different shaped mouth for all that matters. Ten percent of the population is genetically incapable of rolling their tongue into a tube. That doesn’t preclude anyone from playing the harmonica. It just prevents them from being able to perfectly imitate any other players. If it is an issue, you can purchase a Turbo-Lid, a Fan Fair, or a Pipe Humming harmonica, or a small harmonica. Most harmonicas are standard size. A Seydel or a Soul’s Voice is ever so slightly bigger in terms of the spacing between channels. They are all about four inches long. A Piccolo is smaller. I don’t own a Piccolo, but I understand that it is a real harmonica. Most of the key chain harmonicas are regarded as dog whistles. I own a puck, which actually plays very well. But I don’t get the sense that it is sturdy. I think I can blow it out intentionally if I try to. I own a Turbo Lid and a Pipe Humming harmonica. They don’t do a thing for me. I have average size hands for a man. One of my hands was recently fixed. It was broken and painful. But even now I just can’t get the hang of hand effects. It’s not all about big hands. You might not be able to get good hand effects even if you purchase any or all of these products. Just have fun. You can write me if you have any beginner questions. Look at my profile. I answer a lot of harmonica questions. I think you will find all the material you need to learn the harmonica in my profile. If you can’t play poorly and enjoy it all the same, I predict that you will not do well.

Harmonica Scale

On average, how much do you think a standard 12 hole chromatic scale harmonica cost? Also, would you recommend I get one as a beginner who has past musical experience. After looking around, I learned — A good 12 hole chromatic could set you back starting from US$ 140 and can go upto and beyond US$ 400+, depending on the manufacturer and duties in your country. Hohner, I feel, manufactures the best harmonicas of the lot. Lee’s are equally good and so are Suzuki and Herring. But I speak from experience of over 40 years that Hohner are really the Best. But, but, but. . . I would like to offer that you should firstly go in for a diatonic, learn to play it well and then graduate to the Chromatic. You, of course, have the added advantage of knowing music, thereby enabling you to catch on to the notes faster, than an absolute starter. Though you have not mentioned which instrument you play, I assume that you play the guitar and/or keyboard (these are the most widely seen and also the most addictive). Even if you are proficient at playing any other instrument, the fact remains that you do recognize the Seven Golden Notes. No music in the whole universe, whether English, German, Russian, French, Hindi, Italian or any other language, for that matter, is outside these Seven notes. And this is precisely why, music is a universal language and brings all humans closer to each other on one universal platform. You, therefore, certainly have an advantage. So my recommendation is the Diatonic Hohner, to start your love affair with the Harmonica .. Most the very best.

Buying A Harmonica

I would like to buy a decent harmonica for a decent price. I have heard that wood reeds are much better than plastic, which I believe (as I play sax) Also, what key is the best, or should I buy multiple harmonicas? I like the Bob Dylan Signature by Hohner. Is this harmonica any good? To eliteguitarist. . That comment was very rude. . And for your information, I do already play the guitar. You should think more before you speak, or in this case, type. After speaking to others on the web, I found the answer. I myself play Hohner’s Blues Harps, and as for a key, it all depends on the song, and the genre you plan on playing. You either play your harmonica in the same key as the song, or you play the 4th , which is called cross harp. In other words, in this case, if the song is in E you would be playing an A harp. I buy my harps in www. Musiciansfriend. Com costing around 35-40 bucks a piece.

Harmonica Diatonic

What is really the difference between them and witch do you prefer or think would be better . Thanks . After speaking to others on the web, I found the answer. I’m a diatonic player so I’m gonna be biased and say diatonic, but it kind of depends on what you’re after in a harmonica. Diatonics are tuned to a set key which makes them easy to just pick up and and start playing like Bob Dylan. It takes years to master though, diatonics don’t have easy access to all the possible notes like the chromatic harmonica. Several of the notes that aren’t naturally found can be made by bending certain blow and draw notes like the blues guys. It is the bending sound of the diatonic that attracts most people to it. Great for blues, rock and folk. I would recommend Lee Oskar or Hohner Special 20 harps as they are cheap, reliable and easy to play. The chromatic harmonica has a button on the side which allows you to play the normal major scale, and with the button depressed, gives you all the half steps or notes in between. This allows you to play any scale, in any key like a piano, but you can’t bend notes very well on this instrument so you don’t get the same bluesy sound as on the diatonic. Better suited to jazz. I bought a Hohner Chrometta 10 which was reasonably cheap and serves its purpose well enough. Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Lee Oskar Demonstrates the Major Diatonic Harmonica. This is the traditional Blues Harmonica tuning, suitable for playing Blues, Rock, Folk, Country and Pop . . .

I recently purchased a “Hohner Marnie Band Special 20″ also says 560/20 on case. . Anyway I am curious if this is what I need for some serious blues. It is in the key of C and it is a straight harp, is this the right harmonica for blues music. After speaking to others on the web, I found the answer. Yes. The Special 20 is my preference (playing 25 plus years) A C harp is a good start (straight harp is a style of playing, not a type of harmonica) since many lessons are based on a harp in C. I recommend a D as your next harp-its a useful key for blues played cross harp, and its easy to learn bending notes on.

Quality of equipment. Do you know what I found? Not exactly the best of materials, workmanship, or quality control but they’re generally functional and usable as parlor players. You’d probably not want to use one for a professional playing gig unless you were after the sound – it sounds a little “toyish” (thin metallic tone) and can sometimes be little out of tune with itself. They’re in the same class with the bottom-end Hohners (which are also made in China and are well copied by Swan) except that the Hohners are usually a little cheaper. It’s entirely possible that some of these come out of the same factories or are made by the same workers. As you’re shopping, compare the Swan diatonics to the Hohner Blues Band and the Swan tremolos to the Hohner Echo Celeste. You’ll usually find the Hohner a better buy. The Swan 10 and 12-hole Chromatic compares a bit to the Hohner Educator 10 which can be had for about $40 on Amazon. As with any brand of anything; you have to compare apples to apples. You can’t compare the bottom end Swan harps (10-hole plastics) to a Hohner SuperChromonica but you can compare those Swan 10-hole plastics to the Hohner Happy Colors and you’ll come up with about equal results with the Hohner being a touch cheaper for some reason.

Notes For Harmonica

I have a harmonica and being a Dylan fan have often tried to replicate his harmonica playing in songs, but most of them I can’t get. My harmonica is a C and it seems there is always at least one note it can’t play or more. It also seems to sound quite different despite being a Hohner Marine Band which is apparently what he uses. Am I right in assuming that the notes playable on any given harmonica are limited? If so, what key harmonica is used most often in the official releases of his music. What I found out was – A 10-hole diatonic harmonica is limited to the diatonic scale of its key. That is, a C harmonica only has available C D E F G A B C (do re mi fa sal la ti) without bends or overblows. With those pitches available you can play in any of the modes but relative to C. For example, as blues harp style players do, you can play in G mixolydian (second position, crossharp) because that scale only requires you have G A B C D E F G This means there’s more than one it can’t play. A C harmonica is missing C#/Db, D#/Eb, F#/Gb, G#/Ab, A#/Bb – five tones of the chromatic scale. To add further complication, a richter tuned (10-hole diatonic “blues harp&quot harmonica doesn’t have the full scale between 1 and3. The scale at the bottom (alternating blow and draw) is C D E G G B – no F and no A (4th and 6th) down there. This makes it great for chording but not so hot for tune playing and melodies. The pattern from four-up of blow, draw, blow, draw, blow, draw, draw, blow will give you a full major scale in the key of your harmonica. Other scale harmonicas (and chromatic) exist out there that don’t follow this pattern but the instrument we’re most familiar with in the US via folk and blues music is the 10-hole diatonic “blues harp” such as the Marine Band 1896. Solo tuned and chromatic harps follow the 4-7 pattern of the blues harp throughout their whole range and solves the scale run and melody playing problem if you need to get under the root to the fourth or sixth. I can’t speak to the most common Dylan key for harp. Someone else will have to cover that.

Okay, I’m new to harmonica playing. I bought a harp in the key of C, as I was told that’s what you should start with and all. I know for blues you go 4 keys from the guitar to find your harmonica key, so for blues in G you play a harmonica in C. Is that the same for regular guitar playing? If I’m playing a regular song, NOT the blues, do I play in the same key as my harp, or do I have to go 4 up, to G? I’d really like some good answers, because I want to know what to play in so it doesn’t sound terrible. Also, this will help me decide what key to buy a harp in next. Thanks. Basically… If playing blues (“cross-harp&quot on a C harmonica is actually playing in the key of G, then you would play guitar in the key of G also. If you’re playing “straight harp” in C on your C harmonica, then your guitar part would have to be in C as well.

Hohner Blues Harp Harmonica

Hi, few months ago I bought a Hohner Blues Harp, I loved its sound and after only few weeks I could play all bends. My doubt is about the second hole. Now, when I blow through it, it sounds perfectly but when I suck in this same hole, any sound is produced. I have recently “opened” my harmonica, but the second reed is not broken or dirty. Can anybody tell me how to repair it or recommend a book or something explaining how to do? Excuse my poor English. Thank you. After speaking to others on the web, I found the answer. The Blues harp is about the only harmonica that you can actually bend notes. It is tricky but it works perfectly with it. Here is a good site and it is free and shows how to bend notes on the blues harp
