Is Playing The Harmonica Hard

As a beginner I’ve started with C key diatonic harmonica and it seems fun. However, I still find a few things difficult. How not to lose breath? I can’t get over breathing with my chest. Learning from tabs I sometimes find that on a single word I need to draw and blow a few times and the sounds is nothing like the word, how come? Is it possible to play single notes without using that disgusting tongue blocking technique? I would also appreciate any tips to get me going. Basically…1. Your breathing will develop over time. Breathing requires muscles, which need to be developed before achieving complex maneuvers. Over time you will develop techniques to breathing as well (increased airflow through nose, circular-breathing, etc. ). 2. You want to breathe with your chest. 3. I don’t know what you are talking about when you say “Learning from tabs I sometimes find that on a single word I need to draw and blow a few times and the sounds is nothing like the word, how come?” 4. Of course it is possible to “lip purse” single notes, that is what lip pursing is. Over time you will incorporate both tongue-blocking and lip-pursing into your play. ——————- Tips: 1. Practice everyday in small sessions throughout the day. Your brain encodes information much more reliably like this than one big 4hr session a day. 2. Use more parts of your brain than what is required to play. This is important. You should be thinking about your instrument and music throughout the day when you do not have your instrument with you, even if the thought is not required for playing. Thinking is the most important thing you can do, don’t simply research and regurgitate information, think about the things you hear, determine on your own if you agree with certain statements. The music world is filled with an enormous amount of flaky philosophical assertions, Be Wary. Do not hang on ideas that are not supported by quantitative evidence, absolutely and especially if they are philosophical in nature. 3. In every hobby, you will hit walls and slumps. You will feel that practicing isn’t yielding results, just remember that progress is microscopic and compounds over time. Just practice and study no matter what. 4. Talk to musicians. Learning music on your own is like trying to learn principles of bioinformatics on your own. These are difficult things to tackle at first, and the help of a professional can be incredibly helpful. You can meet musicians at local jam sessions or at a local college or university.

Crazy dogggg.
