My boyfriend wants a “long harmonica” and I was wondering which would be the best for a beginner who likes blues and jazz. What I found out was – I wouldn’t recommend a tremelo harmonica for blues. You cannot bend the notes. Most blues is played on a 10 hole major diatonic, such as a Marine Band. My favorite is the Lee Oskar. They play very well, and outlast most other harmonicas by a good ten to one. Yes, REALLY. Blues harmonica players like Little Walter, George Smith, and Rod Piazza play a lot of blues on chromatic harmonicas, using 3rd position (D minor on a C chromatic), usually without using the slide. The Hohner CX-12 is black, looks great (like Darth Vader, sorta), and is quite reasonably priced. Chromatics are usually the harmonica of choice for jazz, although I play jazz on a C major Lee Oskar, which I play chromatically, in all keys. -IronMan Mike Curtis
